fix gcc 9.1.1 compile warnings
Use snprintf instead of strncpy to ensure NUL termination.
Simplify attribute copying to calloc/memcpy instead
of malloc/memset/strncpy/assignment.
Appeases gcc 9.1.1 warnings about strncpy bounds.
